Fiji’s Jungle Cascades
Fiji’s volcanic interior produces dozens of waterfalls — cascading from highland ridges into jungle pools accessible by hiking trails and river journeys. The waterfalls are typically in the interior of Viti Levu, reached by 4WD vehicle, river boat, or a combination of both, and the journey to the falls through the tropical interior (villages, sugar cane fields, rainforest) is part of the experience.
Biausevu Waterfall (Coral Coast, approximately 1.5 hours from Nadi) — a 20-metre waterfall in a rainforest gorge, reached by a 20-minute walk through a traditional village. The pool at the base is swimmable. The village visit and the forest walk are integral to the experience.
Tavoro Waterfalls (Bouma National Heritage Park, Taveuni) — a series of three waterfalls on Taveuni island, the most dramatic waterfall hiking in Fiji. Taveuni is a separate island and not a day trip from Nadi/Denarau.
Upper Navua Gorge waterfalls — the Navua River gorge contains numerous waterfalls visible from the river during longboat or raft tours (covered in the Navua River section).
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I swim at Fiji’s waterfalls?
At most mainland waterfalls, yes — natural pools at the base are swimmable. The water is fresh, cool, and typically clear. Check conditions on the day as heavy rain can affect water levels and safety.
Are waterfall tours physically demanding?
The hikes to most waterfalls are moderate — 20–45 minutes on jungle trails with some uneven terrain. Reasonable fitness is sufficient. Sturdy footwear (not flip-flops) is essential on the muddy, rooted trails.
