Fiji’s Underwater World

Fiji is known as the “Soft Coral Capital of the World” — the warm, nutrient-rich waters support over 1,000 species of fish and 390 species of coral, and the snorkelling accessible from the main islands and the Mamanuca/Yasawa island groups is among the best in the Pacific. Snorkelling tours range from reef trips accessible from the shore (house reefs at island resorts and beach clubs) to boat-based excursions to outer reef sites where the coral diversity and fish life are at their most abundant.

Island day-trip snorkelling — the island experiences (Cloud 9, Malamala, Tivua, Beachcomber) include snorkelling on the surrounding reefs as part of the day package. The Mamanuca reefs are accessible, colourful, and suitable for beginners.

Dedicated snorkel tours — boat trips to specific reef sites selected for coral quality, fish diversity, and water clarity. These visit reefs that the island day trips do not reach and suit visitors who prioritise the underwater experience over the beach club atmosphere.

Shore snorkelling — many Coral Coast and Mamanuca resorts have house reefs accessible directly from the beach. The quality varies by location — ask your resort about the house reef condition before relying on it.

Practical Tips

The water is warm (26–30°C year-round). No wetsuit is needed for snorkelling. A rash vest provides sun protection for your back (the most commonly sunburned area on snorkellers).

Fiji’s coral is alive — do not touch it. Standing on coral, touching it, or collecting pieces kills the organisms. Maintain buoyancy and keep your fins above the reef.

Waterproof sunscreen only. Non-reef-safe sunscreen damages coral. Use reef-safe/biodegradable sunscreen or wear a rash vest for sun protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the best snorkelling in Fiji?

The Mamanuca and Yasawa island groups have the clearest water and healthiest reefs. The Great Astrolabe Reef (off Kadavu island) is considered Fiji’s finest reef but is not accessible on a day trip from Nadi. For day-trip visitors, the Mamanuca island tours offer excellent snorkelling.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer to snorkel?

Basic swimming ability and comfort in water are sufficient. Life jackets are available on most tours. The reef snorkelling areas are typically calm and sheltered.

Is snorkelling equipment provided?

Yes. All snorkelling tours and island day trips provide mask, snorkel, and fins. Bring your own if you prefer a better fit.
